the funniest thing i have heard narrated about autos in bangalore and kannada is the ‘aaa’ and ‘uuu’ story. when the automan asks ‘lefta’ and you say ‘lefta’ you can have an endless conversation going, ‘lefta’, ‘lefta’, ‘lefta’, ‘lefta’, ‘lefta’, ‘lefta’…
so what the non-kannada speaking autorider finally figured after a year is that if the automan asks you something that ends in ‘aaa’ then your reply has to be ‘uuu’. Example,
automan: ‘righta’
autorider: ‘rightu’
hauda?
haudu.

Yellow, Black, Green (hope it takes off soon in Bangalore, the green autos look cool, I would say), how does it matter, as long as it is this miracle called auto?

What would you call the ability to repel an autorickshaw whose driver is leaning outside, looking inquiringly at you, and slows down in front of you just at the moment you want to cross the street AND there is a gap in traffic? Ayyo!rickshaw-fu?
The uncanny ability to dip its nose into any gap between two vehicles and go ahead unmindful of the two vehicles !be it a rolls royce or handcart
Is it a transferable skill? Somedays I think I’ve got it, and somedays I go home, look up Google Maps and figure out the autorickshaw squad is still about ten bucks ahead of me.
